SPI Digital Health: Medicare Virtual Consultations Fall, but IT Vendor Optimism Still a Reality

At the end of December, the CMS published data on telehealth usage in the Medicare population between 1 January 2020 and 30 June 2023.
While the big 2020 COVID-induced spike that it showed was wholly expected given the trends we have tracked across telehealth since the pandemic, the steady, seemingly irrevocable decline that has continued since then is less so. As COVID raged it was reasonably assumed that virtual care that came into its own then would be the ‘new normal’ going forward. And yet, as the CMS shows in this Medicare Telehealth Report, in-person care evidently still dominates in the Medicare population.
