Significant new technologies are frequently blessed with a honeymoon period. Before commercial realities bite, pragmatic challenges must be addressed and limitations realised, there is only the optimism of nascency. Evangelists proffer only positive visions for a technology’s use, highlighting the opportunities it presents.

Over time, however, reality sets in. Unforeseen issues compromise adoption, integration issues with existing solutions arise and devilish details trip early adopters, which must be willing to accept a technology’s constraints.

The use of cloud in medical imaging has reached this stage. The opportunity it offers remains undimmed, but now, as its adoption increasingly becomes a consideration for those in the mass market, some growing pains must be worked through.
