Several studies have recently been published demonstrating the performance of AI tools for medical image analysis. Among them is a study conducted by Annalise.ai and published in The Lancet Digital Health, which highlighted the potential of machine learning tools to augment radiologists and improve the interpretation of chest X-rays. Another joint study, conducted by Lunit and Massachusetts General Hospital, found that using a deep learning-based tool as a second reader offered a significant benefit for radiologists. When using AI these radiologists were able to recommend 28% more chest CT exams for potential lung cancer patients, while also reducing unnecessary CT exams by 30%.
