Change Healthcare and United Healthcare recently made headlines with the news that the former was set to be acquired by the latter’s Optum in a $13bn deal.

There are a lot of synergies between the companies that mean the deal makes a lot of sense. Both companies have strengths over a broad spectrum of revenue cycle management, business analytics, and population health management. In addition, both operate in a similar space, working between payers and providers to offer outsourced revenue collection claims management services, and clinical decision support, as well as developing the technology that facilitates these services. In these regards, both companies are addressing the same need, so combining and integrating them is a logical ambition.

However, part of Change’s business is focused on Imaging IT. On the surface this segment appears to be a less perfect match. This apparent lack of synergy raises questions about the future of Change’s imaging business, and leaves Optum several possible options.
