In collaboration with Microsoft, Paige has revealed the second generation of its Virchow foundation model. The AI vendor, which specialises in developing clinical solutions for cancer care, says that the Virchow2 and Virchow2G models offer a deeper understanding of cells and tissue, which could help to redefine cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Why we are covering this topic
– Cancer represents an enormous global healthcare burden, presenting a ripe opportunity for generative AI to make a difference.
– Foundation models to date have not typically been focused on single conditions.
Why it matters
– Digital pathology represents a very attractive use case for generative AI.
– Microsoft’s involvement is interesting, highlighting the data demand pathology may produce, and infrastructure vendors’ interest in servicing it.
– The model’s open source license demonstrates a research focus, at least for now.
