Incidence rates of breast cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, continue to soar around the world. A recent study conducted in Canada produced particularly alarming results, finding a nearly 46% increase among women in their 20s. Incidence rates for women in their 30s also saw a nearly 13% increase, and statistically significant increases were noted in almost every age group studied.
While this study was specific to Canada, it is indicative of the broader situation and paints a worrying picture. Tackling this issue will require advancement in screening programmes, guidelines, and ongoing innovation from medical imaging vendors’ technology, both hardware and software. With a raft of recent news in the breast imaging ecosystem, we review the biggest challenges facing mammography, and consider what it means for technology industry participants in the future.
