SPI Medical Imaging: HeartFlow Blazes a Trail to Category I

The American Medical Association (AMA) has announced that four existing Category III Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes used to bill for FFR-CT analysis have transitioned to a Category I CPT code, effective from 1st January 2024, supporting FFR-CT as the standard of care in assessing patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD).

As the first Category I CPT code granted for an AI solution in medical imaging, this watershed moment further cements HeartFlow’s position as one of the dominant AI players in the market. A high bar has been set for other AI vendors, who must now ask what lessons can be learned from this unique achievement.
